Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has requested meeting with President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Emmanuel Osedeke, Education Minister, Adamu Adamu and Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed over ASUU’S impending strike.
Gbajabiamila made the request during plenary session after Chairman, House Committee on Basic Education, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, moved a motion of urgent public importance looming strike action.
Reasons behind the impending strike of ASUU include unpaid academic earned allowances and universities revitalization fund. Deputy Majority-Leader, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, noted vow made by Federal Government in the Memorandum if Action signed with ASUU must be fulfilled as corroborated by National Assembly’s Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno.
In his view, National Assembly’s Deputy-Minority leader, Toby Okechukwu, said appropriate committees examine breach of agreements culminating into the looming strike action. It would be recalled that ASUU issued 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over inability to uphold contents contained in its memorandum of Action before 2020’s strike-action was suspended.
